1. Abu Simbel – Egypt
The beautiful temples at Abu Simbel, The Great and The Small, on a sandstone cliff near the Nile River, built during the reign of the great Pharaoh Ramesses II, are rightly marked as a UNESCO sight.
Also when in Egypt, do not forget to pay a visit to the Great Pyramids at Giza. The treasured assets of the pyramid’s residents were buried with them for comfort in the afterlife, and in some cases, animals and even slaves were interred with them, for company and assistance on their afterlife journey.
2. Mount Kilimanjaro
At a height of 19,340 ft above the plains of Africa, Kili (as Mount Kilimanjaro is referred by the locals) is the highest mountain of the continent. A variety of ecosystems prevailing in the region is remarkable with slopes of the alpine desert, rugged heartland, a rainforest and even cultivated agricultural areas.
The climb to the peak can be rugged and my shoes have not lasted till the end during my ascent to the peak. Luckily, I was able to borrow a pair of good Metro Shoes from my travel guide. It is essential that you choose proper shoes when exploring such places. Be sure to wear good leather loafers for men to be able to walk on such terrain.
3. Wildebeest Migration, Masai Mara and Serengeti National Parks – Kenya & Tanzania
The spectacular mass migration of 2 million Wildebeests, Zebras and Antelopes takes place within the plains of the Masai Mara in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania.
Governed by climate and rainfall, the animals migrate from the south of the Serengeti, following the rain and fresh pastures to the northern border with Kenya, the Mara River, often forming the greatest hurdle of the migration, along with predators like Lions, Crocodiles and many more. It is a view to behold with awe.
4. The Virunga Mountains – DRC/Rwanda/Uganda Borders
A chain of volcanic mountains found along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo). It is known as the Virunga Mountains.
The lush forests surrounding these mountains form the last remaining home of the highly endangered Mountain Gorilla. Besides, chimpanzees, the Okapis and Forest Elephants roam freely in the area. The highest peak is Mt. Karisimbii. For active volcano peaks, visit Mt. Nyirangongo and Mt. Nyiragira.
5. Okavango Delta – Botswana
Also known as the “Okavango Swamp”, it is the largest inland delta of the world, spreading across an area of 17,000 km. The old inland sea named Lake Makgadikgadi dried up thousands of years ago forming the region.
There exists an incredible labyrinth of inland lagoons, islands, channels and lakes created by the highland waters of Uganda,f lowing for over a 1,000 km to reach the plains of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana. We highly recommend for a wildlife safari in the region.
6. Ngorongoro Crater – Tanzania
A unique UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro Crater is famous for being the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera. It was formed about three million years ago as a giant volcano exploded here and collapsed on itself.
The crater is a safe, “natural” enclosure for wildlife and forms the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The region is an abode to many animal species including the Big Five. A remarkably high concentration of lions are noticed here.
