While on a tour of India I prefer not to patronize western brand hotel chains or restaurants, instead choosing to find local guest houses or Indian brand properties. So it was an unusual exception that I found myself at Holiday Inn Gem Park situated on the hilltops of Ooty, a popular Tamil Nadu hill station in the heart of South India. Endless choices for hotels in Ooty can be found walking the main roads, but few can compete with the sensational views afforded guest rooms at this hotel.
Ooty is frequented by Indian honeymooners who will love the privacy away from the hectic pace of the city below as well as the many amenities within the property. And tourists traveling to this destination will be happy to find neat and clean spacious rooms, generously sized ensuite bathrooms, as well as internet access.
Guests on an India holiday may prefer not to leave the hotel and instead make their stay in Ooty a time to rest. A large indoor pool is nearly empty at all times allowing private swim time or undisturbed reading poolside. Meticulously maintained lawns dotted with blooming planters of local plants are a perfect setting for reading in the sun-soaked morning or afternoon times. Spa services which include massage, steam room, and fitness room are accessed via an underground stairwell just steps from the lobby doors. And the on-site Indian restaurant catering to all tastes can’t be missed.
Sightseeing around the area is not accessible by walk from Gem Park, as the hotel sits atop a winding road set well off the beaten path of the main square’s shops and cafes. Tuktuk’s to town must be arranged by the hotel staff, however, return rides to the hotel are readily available from anywhere in the city. My usual routine of waking early to hit the local sights was interrupted to relax, rest, and enjoy the sights of Ooty from this wonderfully comfortable hotel in South India
